Kaiser Gets $$ For Girls Locker Rooms

Female athletes at Kaiser High School are one step closer to having their own locker rooms, as $1.87 million in capital improvement funds has been released to build locker rooms and showers for girls sports teams.

At present only girls in P.E. classes have a dedicated locker room, while male student-athletes have their own facilities.

“This project is long overdue, and it’s time we provide facilities for our female athletes that give them the equal respect as their male counterparts,” stated Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui upon freeing up the money in the summer. Title IX rules mandate equity between male and female students in government-funded education programs, including athletics.

In 2012, the governor released $480,000 for design work for the building, and an additional $4.85 million this March, as the project’s total cost is estimated to be $7.2 million. Construction will begin in May 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2016.
