Aiea Freshman Making Impact At HPU

It didn’t take Hawaii Pacific University forward Christopher Galang long to make an impact on the Sharks. With three points in his first three games, the freshman from Aiea has burst onto the HPU soccer scene like a meteor.

“He’s exceeded all of our expectations and done really well so far,” said head coach Chris Fisher.

Galang tallied in his very first college game, a 4-1 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii Sept. 1, and added an assist four days later in HPU’s 2-2 tie with

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

“To be able to come in and help my team with a goal was a great start,” Galang said. “I’d had opportunities, and my teammates were really pushing me forward.”

HPU begins a California road trip next week when the Sharks play Sonoma State Tuesday, Academy of Art Sept. 25 and Notre Dame de Namur Sept. 27.

Galang recently took time away from soccer and studies to talk with MidWeek‘s West Oahu Islander.

What is your earliest sports memory? When I was 5 and playing a lot of basketball in a YMCA program. It came pretty easy to me. I also grew up playing tennis, so when I started playing basketball and soccer, the transition to a team sport was difficult.

Who has had the biggest impact on your life? My parents (Anthony and Saun). They set a great example for me.

What is your least favorite household chore? Cleaning the bathroom. I live in a house with a couple of other guys.

When you surf the Internet, what website do you go to the most? I like to watch a lot of videos, so I would say YouTube. I’m always watching sports highlights and interviews.

What do you do in your free time? I like spending time outdoors, whether hiking or going to the beach.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Hopefully, doing something dealing with sports. I’m studying to be a physical therapist. I wouldn’t mind playing or coaching, if possible.
