Lions Collecting School Supplies In Wahiawa

The Wahiawa Lions are accepting school supplies and cash donations for the benefit of needy children attending area schools.

Donations are welcome from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and July 26 at Wahiawa Shopping Center near Longs and at Tamura’s Market.

According to the club, Wahiawa has Oahu’s second-highest poverty rate, with 82 percent of Wahiawa Elementary students receiving free or reduced lunch, for example. Many of them also will go to school without the necessary materials for learning.

To help combat this problem, club members are aiming to provide public schools with resources needy children can draw upon during the school year.

“Last year we collected 873 pounds of supplies and over $1,560,” said club president Frank Pavao. “With the community’s support, we hope to do even better this year.”

Supplies needed include No. 2 pencils, red and black ballpoint pens, three-hole wide-ruled binder paper, portfolios with inside bottom pockets, bar and pencil-top erasers, glue, paper towels, napkins, facial tissue, liquid soap, boxes of large crayons (8, 16, or 24), Crayola colored pencils and marker sets, watercolor paint sets, marble composition books, Sharpie permanent black markers, yellow highlighters, manila folders, and 5-6 inch Fiskars scissors.
