Fishing Derby Saturday At Park
Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden’s annual Keiki Fishing Derby promises competition for budding anglers from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the garden’s reservoir.
Entry is open and free to anglers in three age groups — ages 4-7, 8-12 and 13-17 — with the opportunity to win in one of three categories per group: longest fish (over 7 inches), most midas cichlids caught and most unusual catch.
All fishing will be catch-and-release only; casting lines is strictly prohibited. Entrants are advised to bring their own handheld poles, barbless hooks and non-live bait (sticky white bread is OK), though the garden will have a limited number of bamboo poles to loan.
Organizers also advise children to wear walking shoes, insect repellent and rain gear, and bring water, lunch and pliers. Parking is available at the visitor center.
