Kaaawa School To Run For Its Life At April 5K
In an effort to save staff jobs, Kaaawa Elementary School is pinning hopes on its 5K Fun Run/Walk from 8 to 10 a.m. April 21 at Kualoa Ranch.
Check-in for the third annual race will begin at 7 a.m., and all ages0 are welcome, including family pets.
“In previous years this run was for the PTO,” said Michele Pouvave, the school’s parent facilitator. “But this time it’s different because with the DOE budget cuts we are looking for a way to save positions. Our school seems to be getting smaller and smaller, while the budget cuts are getting worse and worse.”
The course is a 3.1-mile route through the ranch on unpaved terrain, giving runners and walkers a splendid view of the lush valley where movies are shot, as well as views of the ocean from an angle not normally accessible. Cameras are strongly recommended.
Fee is $18 for adults, $10 for immediate family of students and staff, and $5 for students. All participants get a bottle of water and activities coupons, and those who sign up before April 11 also get a T-shirt. For supporters who cannot make the race, monetary donations are welcome.
