Central Schools Follow Fine Seasons With All Star Honors
The afterglow of Mililani’s recently completed girls basketball season continued last week when the Oahu Interscholastic Association released its All-Conference teams.
The Trojans, who made the final four of the Division I State Basketball Tournament, placed center Sarah Liva and guard Mikaela Limper on the West’s First Team. OIA All-Star teams are selected by league coaches.
Both Liva and Limper were among the reasons why the Trojans finished their 2013-14 season with a 23-4 overall mark under head coach Patrick Basilio.
Mililani went 12-1 versus OIA competition, including finishing unbeaten during the regular season at 10-0. The Trojans went on to finish as the OIA Red Tournament’s runner-up, losing to Roosevelt in the title game.
At the state tournament, Mililani defeated Radford (54-39) and Konawaena (54-51) to advance to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Punahou, 53-48. The Trojans rebounded to defeat Hilo (64-60) in overtime to take the third-place game.
For her part, Liva saved some of her best effort for her biggest games, including a spectacular 18-point, 18-rebound effort against Punahou.
A senior, Liva transferred from Hanalani during the off-season and averaged 16 points per game for the Trojans, fourth-best in the OIA Red Division.
Limper, who also has completed her eligibility, averaged 13.4 points per outing for Mililani. During her final two years with the Trojans, Mililani went 24-2 versus OIA schools.
Limper was a point guard during her junior season but transitioned nicely into more of a scorer this year as the lone returning starter from Mililani’s 2012-13 team. She reached double-figures in all but two games, and twice posted a season-high of 20 points in wins over Kapolei and Pearl City.
Mililani also had three players named to the Honorable Mention Team in Jerika Dacuycuy, Shantel Appleby and Summer Bolibol.
Leilehua also completed a fine season, going 14-6 overall and 11-2 versus
OIA competition. The Mules finished fifth at the OIA Tournament and made the field in the state tournament before a first-round loss to Hilo.
Guard Jerri Maluyo was named to the First Team from Leilehua after averaging 10.5 points per game. She recorded a season-high of 18 in a win over Waianae. Maluyo was a Second Team selection in 2012-13.
The Mules also placed both Tiffany Reyher and Tywanna Abbott on the West’s Second Team. Reyher averaged nine points per game and had a season-high of 15 in a home win over Kapolei. Abbott, who’s only sophomore, averaged 12.5 points per game for Leilehua. Teammates Chyel Palmer and Deja Bryant were chosen to the Honorable Mention Team.
Waialua, which was in its second season in the OIA White Conference after having restarted the program, placed five players (Gabrielle Delgado, Kaedy Hatchett, Kameryn Lendio, Kiana Paakaula-Reis and Liliana Marks) on the league’s Honorable Mention Team.
