FilCom Center Screens War Film

Academy Award-nominated filmmaker John Sayles, recently named University of Hawaii at Manoa’s 2014 Dan and Maggie Inouye Distinguished Chair in Democratic Ideals, is spending the month in residency at the university teaching classes on the Manoa campus.

He also will visit the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu, which will screen his latest film, Amigo, at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Amigo is a fictional account of the Philippine-American War that centers on Rafael, a village mayor who is faced with difficult decisions when U.S. troops occupy his town.

Following the screening, Sayles will participate in a forum alongside Vina Lanzona and Vernadette Gonzalez from the Center for Philippine Studies at UH.

Sayles also will give a presentation on the importance of storytelling at 7 p.m. Feb 21 at UH’s Orvis Auditorium.

In addition to his work in film, Sayles also writes novels, his most recent one being A Moment in the Sun.
