Hands-on Green Jobs Course

Applications are due Feb. 7 for the Hawaii Green Collar Institute, which offers hands-on experiences in ocean-related careers to Leeward Oahu high school students. The program runs during spring intercession from March 17 to 21.

A partnership between Malama Learning Center and Leeward Community College, the Hawaii Green Collar Institute is designed to educate high school students on ocean conservation and climate change issues within their own community, while introducing them to careers in the “green collar” industry.

During the session, students will visit various sites, including a native Hawaiian fishpond, a sea urchin breeding facility, and the National Ocean and Atmospheric

Administration headquarters. At each site, students will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and interact with employees.

At the end of the program, students will work on individual projects aimed at improving an environmental issue in their communities. After the program, students also will be connected to additional experiences in the green collar industry.
