To raise awareness of these and other career-related opportunities, I am pleased to announce that the second annual Hire Leeward Job and Career Fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 8 at University of Hawaii – West Oahu.

The Job and Career Fair is a key component of Hire Leeward’s goal of “Connecting Leeward Residents with Leeward Jobs.” More than 3,000 people seeking to fill more than 1,200 job vacancies attended the fair last year.

Participating businesses and organizations represent a wide choice of companies from the health care, food service, retail and hospitality industries, as well as construction trade industry.

The Hire Leeward initiative is a five-year campaign with the following goals:

1) Encourage Leeward residents to seek Leeward jobs;
2) Reduce traffic congestion to and from town;
3) Encourage better coordination with Leeward employers and job seekers;
4) Encourage Leeward residents to buy from Leeward companies;
5) Hold job training events; and
6) Improve the quality of life for Leeward Oahu residents.

The fair also will feature FREE career development seminars with guest speakers presenting topics such as how to start a small business, preparing for an interview, time-management techniques and more.

Volunteers also will be available to provide resume reviews and oneon-one job coaching.
