New Services At State Libraries

The state library system now offers free new services to card-holding patrons, including loaner computers at dozens of its branches.

Supported by a grant via the federal Library Services and Technology Act, fully functional net-book computers are available for a three-week loan period with no fee from the Kapolei, Aiea, Ewa Beach, Pearl City and Waipahu libraries, as well as 32 others statewide.

“We are delighted to offer our HSPLS (Hawaii State Public Library System) Mobile program and envision it as an exciting new way to bridge the digital divide in Hawaii,” said state librarian Richard Burns. “It is a unique opportunity to bring technology to Hawaii’s people and share our abundant e-resources and free services through our website.”

Also new to the entire system:

* Zinio for Libraries, with links to more than 120 complete, full-color digital magazines. They can be viewed easily on most Internet-enabled devices through the HSPLS website – librarieshawaii.org – after patrons create two accounts.

* Mango Languages, an interactive course in the Hawaiian language with memory-building, review, speech playback and more. Select the “E-Learning @ Your Library” button on the website to create a profile.

* Hawaii Mobile is the new system app for iOS and Android devices to link into the system catalog to check availability of materials, personal account information, etc.
