Recycling Drive Oct. 12 At Waipahu High

A community recycling drive is planned for 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 12 at Waipahu High School, where canned food also will be accepted for Hawaii Foodbank, plus an unlimited number of residential and commercial computers and e-waste – and one TV set per car.

New to the list this month is used tennis balls, which ACI Hawaii (Always Caring Individuals) will refurbish for reuse at tennis tournaments, where hundreds of balls are needed.

Proceeds from redemption fees will benefit the high school, located at 94-1211 Farrington Hwy.

The Going Green drive, coordinated by Rene Mansho, welcomes all kinds of metal, bicycles, appliances, HI-5 containers, cooking oil, cell phones, printer cartridges, corrugated cardboard, plastic bags and caps, batteries, fire extinguishers and propane tanks (maximum of three), pet food and supplies, prom dresses, business suits, plastic playground equipment – and even pairs of white socks (for Afghanistan).

Goodwill and Lions clubs will make use of any donated clothing, household items, hearing aids and eyeglasses. Participants also can swap incandescent light bulbs for CFLs.

The drive cannot accept tires, paint, microwave ovens, motor oil or hazardous fluids.

Also helping out are U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Gov. Neil Abercrombie, state Sen. Clarence Nishihara, Rep. Ty Cullen, and City Councilmen Breene Harimoto and Ron Menor.
