Kaneohe Girl To Scout For Members At Mall
Who better to recruit new Girl Scouts than a lifelong, enthusiastic member? Now a high school senior, Kaneohe’s Kristen Dau first joined the scouting program in kindergarten – as a Daisy – and has been learning and achieving ever since.
But this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Windward Mall, the Gold and Silver Award winner will put on her recruiter hat. It’s her required senior project for Maryknoll High School, but the mall effort is much more than that.
“The senior project is focused on addressing something you are passionate about and taking it to the next level,” she wrote in her proposal. “I am passionate about Girl Scouting and … am focused on the issue of the declining membership of Girl Scouts (and adult leaders) on the Windward side.”
To that end, Dau has planned games, crafts and photo displays; and she’ll have her sister scouts from Troop 1018 on hand to explain and share about the projects, trips, friendships and activities that go with scouting. Those who listen to Dau personally will hear how it has built character, improved her self-esteem and nurtured leadership skills.
“I learned how important it is to serve our community and what a difference we can make by getting involved and helping,” Dau said.
