Conservancy Volunteers To Pluck Plastic From Windward Shores

The Ocean Conservancy’s quest for a plastic-free Hawaii continues this Saturday on the Windward, Leeward and North Shore coasts.

The group’s 28th International Coastal Cleanup Day, in partnership with Kokua Hawaii Foundation and others, will run from 9 to 11 a.m. at James Campbell Wildlife Refuge, Kailua area beaches, Kaena Point (Mokuleia route) and at Ma’ili Beach Park. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. at the first three.

Last year Ocean Conservancy and its partners mobilized half-a-million volunteers who picked up 10 million pounds of trash worldwide.

Participants should bring sun protection, refillable water bottles and gloves. Buckets, colanders and reusable rubbish bags also are helpful.

The wildlife refuge is at mile marker #15 on the makai side of Kamehameha Highway, between Kahuku and Turtle Bay. Kailua volunteers can check in at three sites: Kai Olena access in Lanikai, at Kailua Beach Park across from Buzz’s, or at Kalama Beach Park. To reach Kaena Point, take H-2 to Kaukonahua Road, to Farrington Highway past Waialua and go about one mile past Camp Erdman until you reach the parking lot.
