Council Honors Patrol Groups

Community members from Ewa, Mililani, Waipahu and other neighboring areas gathered at Mililani Town Center Aug. 6 for the 30th anniversary of National Night Out.

The event aims to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention programs, generates support for neighborhood anti-crime programs and strengthens police and community partnerships.

To mark the anniversary, City Councilman Ron Menor and Council chairman Ernie Martin presented an honorary certificate to members of Honolulu Police Department’s District 2 Community Policing Team.

Menor (District IX – Waikele, Waipahu, Village Park, Makakilo, Kunia and Mililani Town) also presented individual certificates of merit to members of the district’s community policing team.

“Good things happen when the community partners with the police to fight crime. By working together, we all can make a difference,” he said. “Mahalo to the many volunteers who give generously of their time and personal resources to make our communities safer places to live, work and play.”

Martin stated that local citizen patrol and security watch groups – many that were present at the event – are crucial in anti-crime efforts.

“I would like to commend neighborhood watch volunteers throughout Oahu for their ongoing efforts to report suspicious activities to the police,” Martin told the crowd..

National Night Out recognizes the efforts of community policing, neighborhood security watch and citizen patrol programs across the country.
