New Features Unveiled At PCC
Marking its 50th anniversary this year, Polynesian Cultural Center is in the middle of a five-year revitalization plan that includes a new “cinematic extravaganza” in the Hawaii Village and a Samoan luau production outside its Samoan Village.
Both features opened in recent weeks. Previously added to the busy Laie attraction are GoNative! hands-on activities for guests and renovations within the other cultural island villages.
Hawaiian Journey is a 12-minute show similar to the park’s former IMAX theater experience. Recounting the history of Hawaii’s people, it’s housed in a volcano and projected on an enormous screen, complete with special-effect movements, sounds and smells. The village also has added new activities, exhibits, a taro patch and a fishpond.
The Island Luau in the Samoan Village is presided over by the Samoan Chief’s Court and the village’s senior ambassador, Kap Teo Tafiti, offering plenty of audience participation, keiki fireknife dancers, music, dance and basket-weaving. On the menu is a combination of Samoan and Hawaiian dishes, including a roasted pig.
The luau runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
