P.E.O. Propels Waipahu Grad

Recent Waipahu High graduate Hazel Andrada is off to the all-women’s Cottey College in Nevada this fall to study international relations with $7,500, thanks to scholarship help from Hawaii Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.).

It is the local chapter of P.E.O. International, which works to expand opportunities for women.

Promoting educational success is P.E.O.’s primary goal, and it has a number of grant, award and loan programs to back it up.

“The organization motivates women to achieve their highest aspirations,” said Nancy Airhart of the Hawaii P.E.O.

The local group also awards scholarships to nontraditional students, offers a two-year educational loan, and also a grant for doctoral students.

Applicants for the annual Cottey College scholarship are evaluated based on academic merit as well as need.
