Aloha ‘Aina Recycling Is May 4 At Mililani Uka

Mililani Uka Elementary School will partner with Kokua Hawaii Foundation and Schnitzer Steel to conduct an Aloha Aina recycling drive from 9 a.m. to noon May 4 on the campus.

Proceeds from the drive (in the form of payment from recyclers) will go to the school.

Residents are urged to bring all kinds of items to the drive, from scrap metal to used cooking oil. A document shredding service also will be operating at the event.

The wish list includes bicycles, computers, game systems, batteries, paper, glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, newspaper, corrugated cardboard, printers and toner cartridges, appliances and more. Goodwill Industries will accept gently used clothing and household items.

“This is a great step forward while we continue to work with the DOE on a statewide recycling solution for public schools,” said Kokua Hawaii’s Carol Feinga, noting the recent removal of collection bins (and revenue) from campuses.

Schnitzer’s partnership with the North Shore-based nonprofit was launched in January to revitalize the Aloha Aina program with monthly collections at different schools around the island.

The Kokua Hawaii-Mililani Uka partnership has also brought gardening projects, nutritious cooking lessons and nature talks to the school, along with a trip to a taro patch.

The school is located at 94-380 Kuahelani Ave. For more information, email 3rs@kokuahawaiifoundation.org.
