Mahi To Direct ‘Magic’ Concert At Calvary
Windward Arts Council and Calvary Episcopal Church will present “The Magic of Christmas Music” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, conducted by Aaron Mahi and featuring numerous island talents.
The free public concert at the church will have the Hawaii Festival Orchestra, Hawaii Ecumenical Chorale and special performances by soprano (and Mahi’s wife) Cathy Foy, harpist Sharene Lum, oboist Brad Shimizu, violinist Robert Hamilton and budding pianist Shandee Teruya, 14.
Choreographer Adelani Malia will present dancers from Ballet de Corps.
The annual Christmas concert was founded in 1999 by Louise Emery and her late husband Dwight.
“We wanted to focus on young talent and keep it free so that all Windward residents could come and see real musicians playing real instruments,” explained Emery, a former DOE teacher and member of Calvary church, which hosts every show. Experiencing excellent classical music live, she noted, can have a special impact on people. Emery also will play keyboards during the program.
The church is located on Aumoku Street across from Windward City Shopping Center. For more information, call 247-0610.
