Y Family Camp Has Fun For All

The Halloween spirit is alive and well at YMCA’s Camp Erdman this weekend as families are invited to come join its annual Halloween Family Camp.

The spooktacular entertainment includes sports, activities, campfires, a costume contest, trick or treating and a haunted house.

“It’s two days of fun,” said marketing and communications director Lisa Ontai. “It’s great family time together and it’s easy. All they need to do is bring their bags because we’ve got cabins, bunk beds, hot showers, and all their meals are provided. We have families who make it a tradition – they just love it because it’s the easiest camping you can ever do on this island.”

The camp is open keiki, parents, grandparents and everyone else regardless of age. This full-family approach is what makes the camps such an attractive option, said senior program director Andrew Vanderwege.

“The family camps are great times to come together as a family,” he said. “There are a lot of fun activities out there, but this also is a time that they can really do some youth development with the kids, and for families to become closer. It’s also a great way to meet other families from around the island.”

In addition to Halloween activities, the program will include a native Hawaiian storytelling component.

“One of the really neat things is that Hawaiian culture is always part of what we do,” said Vanderwege. “One of our staff members is going to discuss Hawaiian legends, and the kids and their families will be able to enjoy Hawaiian legends and storytelling.”

There is still time to register. The camp runs Friday through Sunday, and rates begin at $104 per person for YMCA members and $130 for nonmembers. Cabins are available for larger families, and financial assistance is available for those who qualify.
