Taiko Drummers Seek New Practice Site
The Taiko Center of the Pacific still seeks a new home in Honolulu, after being displaced last December by renovation plans for the Kapiolani Community College chapel. And it’s temporary venue — Hawaii Opera Theatre’s rehearsal studio — was to end Aug. 31.
“Every day we are checking places,” said Kenny Endo last week. Since 1994 he has led the taiko center at the KCC site, but now he’s writing letters to supporters: “Ideally,” he wrote, “to be able to network with a school, community center, temple or church would allow us to run our classes and store some equipment. The main issue is that the sound not bother people … and we realize we may have to add some sound dampening material to the room.”
The performing group also needs to have parking and the convenience of restrooms. Endo said they would be willing to offer classes, shows or demonstrations to the hosting organization to make it a “win-win.”
