Area Entertainer Returns To Sports As TV Broadcaster
West Oahu resident Jordan Salud’s upbringing was so intertwined with sports that you could make the argument that he practically learned to count by watching a scoreboard. His passion for sports was also fueled by observing his father, professional boxer Jesus “The Hawaiian Punch” Salud.
Boxing was off-limits to Jordan, however.
“My dad thought boxing was a rough sport and didn’t want me to be a boxer, so I played almost everything else,” said Salud,
who has played baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey and football. “I excelled mostly in soccer and basketball.”
Jordan’s adult life has been filled with time well spent in the entertainment industry, as he has become a popular musical artist, songwriter, composer and in-demand master of ceremonies, as well as a for- mer DJ on 102.7 The Bomb. It was only a matter of time before he would find his way back to sports — this time in broadcasting. Salud, whose stage name is I.A., is currently the public address announc- er for Nanakuli home basketball games. His latest foray into sports broad- casting is as the host of the new TV show for OC16 called Hawaii Prep GameWeek. As the 2012 prep football season is set to begin, I.A. recently took some time away from his busy schedule to visit with MidWeek’s West Oahu Islander.
What is your earliest sports-related memory?
Probably going into the ring with my dad after he won his first championship at The (Los Angeles) Forum. I remember the atmosphere and the cele- bration. (L.A. Lakers owner) Jerry Buss was there, and there were a lot of other celebrities. It was a bit much for a 5-year- old.
Who’s had the biggest impact on you in your life?
I’d have to say my son (6-year-old Izayah). He’s humbled me. I’ m more serious now about every- thing I do now. He makes me want to achieve more and be a good role model for him.
What made you want to branch out into sports broadcasting?
I wanted to expand my potential. I always wanted to be on camera and be part of something that I’ m passionate about.

What is your least favorite household chore?
Doing the laundry. I hate doing the laundry.
What movie could you watch over and over?
The Goonies and The Sandlot. They never get old.
What’s the most memorable sporting event you’ve ever watched?
It has to be Michael Jordan taking his last shot (for the Chicago Bulls) over the outstretched hand of Bryan Russell (of the Utah Jazz) in (Game 6 of) the 1997 NBA Finals. His posture after the shot was epic and that shot was how they won the cham- pionship.
Who is your favorite musical artist?
Jay-Z and Michael Jackson.
How to do like to spend your free time?
I like spending time with my family, playing sports, working on new music, and I also coach my son’s sports teams. He plays football, soccer and baseball.
